Riverstone's Holiday Season Opens on Back-to-Back Nights, Beside a Landmark That's Finally Being Restored

Substantial buff-brick home with a sheltered limestone entry, bronze-framed windows, a broad front lawn and a mature spreading oak in soft evening light.

Riverstone's holiday season begins on two nights in a row. The community's own Tree Lighting is Thursday, November 19, at The Club at Riverstone. Sugar Land lights its tree at Town Square the next evening, and Sugar Land Holiday Lights opens at Constellation Field the same night. That much happens every year. What's different in 2026 is the Imperial Sugar Char House. Less than a month before Holiday Lights opens, the City of Sugar Land committed $15 million to preserving it, and crews are expected to mobilize in December, while the 45-night lights run is in full swing.

The calendar below covers both, starting with the two-night opener.

Thursday at The Club, Friday at Town Square

The two openers are built differently, and it's worth knowing the difference before deciding whether to make both.

Riverstone Tree Lighting Sugar Land Christmas Tree Lighting
Date Thursday, Nov. 19 Friday, Nov. 20
Time 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Location The Club at Riverstone Sugar Land Town Square, 2711 Plaza Drive
Host Riverstone Development Co. City of Sugar Land Parks & Recreation, presented by St. Michael's Elite Hospital Sugar Land
What's on Live music, letters to Santa, a craft table, cookie decorating, a Santa visit Holiday entertainment, shopping and dining, ending with the tree illumination

The Riverstone Tree Lighting is the more neighborly of the two. Drinks and sweets are sold by Mary Had a Little Party, and holiday ornaments are handed out first come, first served while they last. For a family that wants an ornament, arriving at 5:30 makes more sense than arriving at 7:30.

Sugar Land's version is bigger and runs a little earlier. In its fall events announcement, the City describes it as a Winter Wonderland tradition at Town Square that closes with the lighting of the city's tree. The same release notes that "the holiday season arrives a little earlier this year" at Town Square.

Because the two are on consecutive evenings, a Riverstone household can go to both without picking one. Thursday is the neighborhood event. Friday is the citywide one, and it falls on the same night Holiday Lights opens.

Forty-five nights at Constellation Field

Sugar Land Holiday Lights, presented by Houston Methodist, returns for its 13th year on November 20 and runs every night through January 3. According to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys' announcement, that's 45 nights in a row with no dark nights, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The ballpark will have more than 3.5 million lights, a 40-foot Christmas tree, a synthetic-ice rink with skate rentals, a nine-hole mini golf course, and fire pits for nightly s'mores.

Most Sunday through Thursday nights run from 6 to 9 p.m., and most Fridays and Saturdays run from 6 to 10 p.m. Early-bird tickets start at $15 through the Holiday Lights ticket page. The carnival runs most nights from November 27 through January 1, and Santa photos are offered nightly until December 23.

With that many nights to choose from, the themed evenings are the best way to pick a date. Here they are in calendar order:

  1. Kids Market, Saturday, Nov. 21
  2. Goodwill Mondays, Nov. 23, Nov. 30 and Dec. 7
  3. Silver Bells Nights with bingo, Tuesdays Nov. 24, Dec. 1 and Dec. 8
  4. Teacher Appreciation Nights with a wine-tasting add-on, Nov. 25 and Jan. 1
  5. Center Field Cinema Nights, presented by Houston Methodist, Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13
  6. Military and First Responders Night, Nov. 30
  7. Astros Night, Dec. 3
  8. Vendor Market with local vendors, Friday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 6
  9. Scout Night, Dec. 5, and Health Care Professionals Night, Dec. 6
  10. Sensory Friendly Night, Dec. 15
  11. New Year's Eve, open late with fireworks at midnight and the New Year's Eve Ball packages in the First Community Club

Dog owners have a standing date of their own. Lights and Leashes, presented by Hollywood Feed, runs every Sunday except December 20. It's a good winter stand-in for Pawm Springs Dog Park at Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd., where the City held its Yappy Hour in October. The splash pad that opened in October beside the Memorial Park playground has closed for the season and is scheduled to reopen April 15, 2027.

What's starting at the Char House

Holiday Lights has run for 13 seasons on the Imperial side of Sugar Land, and in every one of them the Char House has stood unused. The City's October 21 release says the building sat "vacant and deteriorating for more than two decades" before the City bought the Imperial Historic District in June 2025. City Council acted on October 20 to move a full preservation plan forward.

The planned work is extensive:

  • A new permanent roof
  • Structural repairs to the exterior walls and the rear liquor gallery
  • Selective steel and masonry repairs
  • Mechanical and electrical improvements
  • Historically appropriate restoration of the windows
  • Restoring the Imperial signage and moving it back to its historic position on the building

That last item will be the most visible from the road. Urbano Architects is leading the design, and Bellows Construction is the construction manager at risk. In its October release, the City said it anticipated a groundbreaking on November 5, and it expects construction crews to mobilize in December, with completion estimated for March 2028.

In the same release, Mayor Carol K. McCutcheon put it this way:

"More than an iconic building, the Char House is a physical connection to Sugar Land's history and the origins of our community."

The $15 million comes from the $50 million Certificate of Obligation the City previously issued to buy and preserve the property, and it is funded through Sugar Land's economic development sales tax corporations. The City says the work follows Texas Historical Commission standards, which keeps the building eligible for historic tax credits. The new windows and other upgrades are meant to prepare the building for possible office, commercial, retail and restaurant uses. Sugar Land's economic development office says the City has finished a community visioning process, adopted a vision statement and guiding pillars, and launched a national search for a master-development partner, with a selection expected in 2026. The City's Imperial Historic District page follows the project from here.

The building won't look much different this season. Scaffolding, staging and crews may start appearing around it in December, before any of the restoration shows on the outside.

December, when both calendars are running

The busiest stretch of Holiday Lights overlaps with the Char House's first month of active construction. The Vendor Market weekend is December 4 through 6, the last Center Field Cinema Night is December 13, and Santa photos end December 23. All of that falls in the month the City expects crews to mobilize.

Smart Financial Centre's December schedule fits around those dates. Its current listings include:

Date Show
Saturday, Nov. 28 Leslie Odom, Jr., "The Christmas Tour"
Tuesday, Dec. 8 "A Magical Cirque Christmas"
Sunday, Dec. 20 "The Ultimate R&B Holiday Jam" with Keith Sweat and Kut Klose
Sunday, Dec. 27 "Love Actually in Concert"
Tuesday, Dec. 29 "Nutcracker! Magical Christmas Ballet"

A few pairings work out neatly. December 8 is both the last Silver Bells bingo night at Constellation Field and the Cirque Christmas show. December 20 is the one Sunday without Lights and Leashes, which leaves the evening open for the R&B Holiday Jam. The Nutcracker on December 29 comes just before the New Year's Eve fireworks over the ballpark at midnight.

The construction schedule runs much longer. The City's estimate puts Char House completion in March 2028, so this season and next will both have work underway at the Char House. This year is the first.
